The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak

Book review by:

Ruth Pickard

Elif Shafak (2022) The Island of Missing Trees. Penguin ISBN: 978-0-241-98872-5

I loved this book set in a divided Cyprus.  It covers a lot of history about Cyprus, leading up to and during the war.  Two teenagers from different sides of the island fall for each other & have to meet in secret.  The story follows their lives in Cyprus from the 1970s and in England in the 2010s. A fig tree plays a part in the story, and the reader will wonder whether trees have thoughts and feelings.  I found myself looking at a map of Cyprus several times as the story progressed.

The book covers love, grief & war from the eyes of three generations.
