Hardy Perennial
Thomas Hardy
The continuing legacy of Thomas Hardy
Led by Kate Streeter, this cabaret-style evening features a selection of Thomas Hardy’s poetry and his prose, brought to life through live music, dramatic readings, specially-made recordings, and film.
Now known mainly for his novels, Hardy thought of himself as primarily a poet. He thought of poetry as his ‘true calling’, since he could ‘express more fully in verse ideas and emotions which run counter to … crystallised opinion’. Spanning seventy years, his often spare and deceptively simple verse reflects not only the seismic shocks and moral challenges of the 19th and early 20th centuries but also grants valuable insights into his life, his loves … and the reasons for his enduring appeal.
The evening promises to be a richly engaging experience.
