Brain Peaks

Brain Peaks

by Angela Patmore

How each one of us has a genius inside.

Angela Patmore’s research as an author, journalist, International Fulbright Scholar and UEA Research Fellow bridges the arts and sciences.

Over many years, she has investigated the peak experiences we find in all our leisure activities, from fiction and sports to movies, classical music, thrill-seeking activities, and even childhood dares. All these experiences follow the same pattern: every-increasing tension and pressure rising to a climax followed by resolution. This is because the brain, like all complex systems, undergoes a change at the height of crisis or excitement. On the very edge of chaos, it suddenly produces order, beauty, satisfaction and joy. This is where our revelations come from: our epiphanies, visions, inspiration and our genius.
